Barcode questions, answered
What to use, how to print, and why a barcode might not scan.
Which barcode type should I use?
- Code 128 for your own SKUs and internal product codes. It accepts letters, numbers and symbols.
- EAN-13 or UPC-A for products sold through retail shops, where the number follows a standard.
- QR code when you want customers to scan a link, or you need to store more text than a barcode comfortably holds.
Are these barcodes registered? Can I sell with them?
They are valid barcodes that scanners will read, but they are not registered with GS1, the organisation that issues official product numbers. They are perfect for your own shop and stock. If a large retailer or online marketplace requires registered product numbers, you will need numbers issued by GS1. For in-store use, EAN-13 numbers that start with 2 are reserved so they never clash with real products.
What is a check digit?
The last digit of an EAN-13 or UPC-A number is worked out from the others, so scanners can catch typing mistakes. Enter all but the last digit and we add it for you. If you enter the full number and the last digit is wrong, we will tell you what it should be.
How do I print labels on a sheet of stickers?
- Open Bulk labels, upload a CSV or paste your rows, and choose the sheet that matches your stickers.
- Download the PDF and print it at actual size (100%). Turn off "fit to page" or any scaling.
- Test on plain paper first, and hold it against a sticker sheet to check the alignment. Use "Adjust print alignment" to nudge it.
Why won't my barcode scan?
- Too small. Very narrow bars are hard to read. Use a larger label or a shorter code.
- Not enough blank space. Leave a clear white margin on both sides.
- Low contrast. Print in solid black on white. Avoid coloured or glossy backgrounds.
- Scaled when printing. Print at 100%, never "fit to page".
Is my data private?
Yes. The barcodes are made in your browser. Your product list and CSV file are never uploaded or stored anywhere.
